SECRETARY’S REPORT 2024

During the year all our teams provided great entertainment. Participation and enjoyment at underage level all year was exceptional. I don’t need to go into detail as our Coaching Officer, LGFA and Camogie Reports tell it all. A great effort was put in by so many to try and keep juvenile football and camogie alive and joyful for all. It is important going forward that the fun element is not forgotten and that children, players, coaches, match officials and all volunteers are treated with RESPECT. Our Senior team displayed some great football and played an exceptionally good replay relegation game as they displayed great teamwork throughout the game. Hopefully we can play similar in 2025 and make a good show in Division 2 and Intermediate Championship. Our Minor men and U14s reached finals and unfortunately not right result but playing skills and teamwork impressive and all positive for Drumgoon Eire og future. Thanks to all committee members, coaches and players for their help to me as secretary and I must especially mention our Chairperson Jimmy, Treasurer Patricia, Vice Chairpersons Roseanna and Damien, Donail as Juvenile Secretary, to Aogan, Pauline, Ena and Gerry for always just being there when needed and all who helped in any way. 2024 we were successful with our Clár Grant application to put 220 seats in the stand and tarmac the carpark stand side. This development has had such a positive impact on all our supporters, particularly our elderly. Unfortunately for Drumgoon Eire og and myself as secretary – Jimmy as Chairperson and Patricia as Treasurer have decided to step down from their positions. The hard work, dedication and continuous commitment will be sorely missed but I know both will continue as volunteers within the Club and the friendship will be life long. Big shoes to fill whoever takes on their roll but once Drumgoon Eire Og continues to grow with new and existing volunteers – hard work will be made easy. I ask all Club Members to volunteer help in some way in the coming year 2025 as we all need help and encouragement. There is an unbelievable amount of work involved in the day to day running of the Club including Insurance, registration, fixtures, fundraising, ground maintenance and last but most important Child and Player welfare. Rules and guidelines must be followed to protect the Club, our juveniles and ourselves as individuals volunteering both for now and into the future. I especially want to thank our Senior Management team in 2024 – Gerard McGeough, Benny McIntyre, Ken Coughlan and Damien Clarke. I found them very helpful and professional in all dealings during the year. Thanks to Aoife McDonald for all her help with Physio. Thanks to Tony Mahon for keeping the grounds in great shape and to Damien Clarke who always is available to do whatever needed around our facilities.Gratitude to all voluntary help which is what the Club is made off – where would we be without you all —- yourselves on committee, coaches, lotto sellers/helpers and all who helped with our tuck shop at home games. A special thanks to Donal Murphy who is representing the Club refereeing within the County for all age groups. It is just brilliant to have a Referee from the Club and hopefully more will follow. In conclusion, I wish everyone a Happy and healthy Christmas and New year. May 2025 bring Good Health and plenty more fun and games for all.

  • Camogie review for 2024

Drumgoon camogie had another busy season in 2024, fielding teams in every underage competition and a senior intermediate team. The u8’s and u10’s trained on Monday evenings, starting in early April until late October and participated in blitz’s organised by the county board in June and July. Some of our u8 and u10 players attended development squad sessions in Breffni Park in September and October. Many thanks to Tonya Murphy, Marie McQuaid, Caroline Martin and all parents for their help with coaching. The u12 season ran from March to October. The team reached the u12 Division one blitz final with Ballinagh and Denn. Drumgoon won the group in Breffini 3g park in June. The team also travelled to an Ulster Blitz Day in Garvaghy, Co Tyrone in June and had a fantastic day. The team also reached the division 2 championship final against Bailieboro in October and were narrowly beaten after extra time. Well done to all players who participated in county development squads at u11 and u13 age category. Special mention to Dernakesh school team who won the Cumann na mBunscol Div 3 final in October against Lacken. Well done to Cadhla Johnston who won player of the match. Thanks to Mr McCaffrey and Mr Monahan for promoting camogie in Dernakesh NS. Many thanks to coaches Mick Holden, Aine Coughlan, Eadaoin Fox and Margaret McCabe, and thanks to all parents who helped out throughout the year. The U14 team competed in division 1 league and championship. This was a tough division for the girls, but they fought hard in all their games and made the semifinal in the championship. Thanks to Sabrina Shalvey for coaching during the year. The U16 team competed in division 2 league and championship. There was a huge effort put in by all the girls throughout the year and they played their hearts out in all games. The highlight of the year was representing Cavan in the John West Camogie Feile in Roscommon. The girls played against teams from Kerry, Roscommon and Tyrone. Thanks to Codi Shalvey for all dedication throughout the year and to all parents for their help and support. The minors played in division 1 this year and made great strides in reaching the division 1 league final where they were narrowly beaten by Castletara. They also made the division 1 semi-final and unfortunately came up short against Bailieboro. Big thanks to Annmarie Bannon, Joeann Halpin and Anna Sheanon for coaching the team. The senior intermediate team was in transition this year with a few of our senior girls leaving our shores to work abroad or some not available due to college or work commitments. Our young camógs stepped up to the challenge and fought hard battles in all games played in the league and championship. Thanks to Paddy Bates and Michael Fitzpatrick for coaching the girls. Thanks very much to Drumgoon Eire Og for the use of the pitch throughout the year, special thanks to Jimmy who was always very obliging and to Tony for the upkeep of the pitch. Thanks very much to everybody that contributed to all our fundraising activities during the year, it is greatly appreciated.Wishing all Drumgoon teams a successful 2025

Drumgoon Ladies Report

2024 marked the 30th Anniversary of Ladies Football in Drumgoon and its brilliant to say that 30 years on we, as a club, are growing year on year fielding 8 Teams from u6’s right up to Senior Level Ladies teams. None of this would happen without our coaches who give up their time week after week all year through so a huge thanks to them all.Fun & Frolics were had on Saturday 5th October when the 30th anniversary celebrations took place on Boyle Park and seen many of the original team from 1994 play a game with current players. We were so proud of Lesha Crosson who not only represented us at County Level but on the Ulster & All Ireland Stage when she was part of the Cavan u14 Team.We would like to thank our Main Sponsor Patrick Moynagh & Moynagh Accounting for the continued support and belief in our ladies team. Finally we would to thank the committee, for the use of Boyle Park & the facilities for both training and games.

Coaching Report

Nursery & Go Games

This year once again saw brilliant participation and skill on show on Boyle Park. Our Go Games teams began the year with a workshop from Jody and Seán Clarke, bringing many new ideas and energy to our coaching teams. Again, it was a joy to see so many young people learning and enjoying playing our games on Saturday mornings. A highlight of our Nursery and Go Games this year was the return of the Killian O’Connell tournament for our u12s. This was a very successful day with great skill on show evoking lovely memories of the tournament from years past. Thank you to all the organisers, referees and helpers on the day. Thank you to Cootehill, Shercock and Killinkere for your participation and to Darren O’Connell for coming along to present medals to all the players. Some of our senior players were also on hand to give goodie bags to all the players and we appreciate your presence. Thank you to all our Go Games and Nursery coaches who give wonderful service to our club and to our youngest players.U14Our U14 squad had a strong league campaign, narrowly missing out on a semi-final place but regrouped strongly and won the shield competition. Many of these players are still underage next year and they acquitted themselves very well in all their games. After a thrilling championship campaign, our lads found themselves in the final against a fancied Gowna team who beat them at the quarter final stage last year. After a pulsating game our boys were defeated in the cruellest manner, a last minute goal. After such a brilliant performance it was an unfortunate way to lose but the boys must be proud of their progress and efforts throughout 2024 Thank you and well done to all our u14 coaches for their efforts this year with this exciting team.

U16 Our U16 team endured a difficult year this year where lady luck deserted them time and again. There was a lot of hope for this strong group but a series of unfortunate events conspired to ensure it became a frustrating year. After some narrow one point defeats in the league the boys found themselves in the Shield competition. Following an excellent game against neighbours Shercock the boys successfully won the shield final and looked ahead to what promised to be a tough championship. Once again however, luck wasn’t on the side of our lads as they suffered injuries in the first game, ending the championship participation of a number of players. The squad rallied in the best spirit of Drumgoon and battled to a quarter final spot. Unfortunately, it proved to be one hurdle too many however and an injury ravaged Drumgoon ran out of steam against Shercock on this occasion. While the outcome of the season wasn’t what we hoped for these boys, the team has grown together and shown great resilience. They continued to compete despite all their bad luck and this will stand to them as they get older. Thank you to their coaches and everyone who helped and supported them this year.

U18 Our U18 team put in some huge performances this year to show that hard work, self-belief and a togetherness can achieve great things. A strong league campaign resulted in a semi final spot. The boys played a tough game against eventual league champions St Thomas and they can be proud of their efforts. This impressive league run gave the lads great belief in themselves which was the catalyst for an unforgettable championship campaign which brought immense pride to us all.The minor team reached the championship final and though they fought valiantly, they fell short against an amalgamation for the second time this year, this time against Blackwater Gaels after a hugely enjoyable final. This successful run was a great reward for this group of players who previously had struggled in division 4 and were not seen as a strong outfit. They have shown us all that persistence with practice and coaching, coupled with pride in the Drumgoon jersey can bring great opportunities for success. Thank to all these players and coaches for their efforts this year. Our underage section has had another healthy and successful year. With so many Go Games blitz’ and tournaments played, finals reached at U14, U16, and u18 level, Drumgoon continue to compete strongly year after year. Our coaches bring great standards and skills to the practice field and the determination and passion of our players reflects a great pride in our club. Hopefully the continued success of our underage teams, not just this year but over the past number of years, can soon be reflected in our adult ranks.

Reserves. 2024 was a disappointing year for our reserves. The team competed well, unfortunately they missed out on a semi final spot in both league and championship. Not having players available on a regular basis hampered the team’s ability to get some consistency and a sporadic games competition didn’t help matters. I think that not competing in the u20 competitions this year also interfered with player’s availability. It is important that we work hard to seek out more help in looking after our players in this age bracket to provide games for them. The U20 and reserve team pathway must be promoted and made a viable stepping stone for young players onto the senior panel.

Senior A difficult year for the senior team ended with safety secured in both league and championship. The team suffered some very poor luck with injuries all year and never had a full squad available for both competitions. A tough division two league campaign saw notable home victories over neighbours Cootehill and Shercock. Safety was secured with a last round victory over Butlersbridge. Losing has become as much of a habit as winning, and so it showed in the Intermediate championship as Drumgoon snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on more than one occasion. A tense game against Denn could have gone either way but luck deserted Drumgoon as they lost out by a point. A six point loss to champions Arva followed before victory was denied against Shercock with a later equalizer conceded. Déjà vu. The last round against Bailieborough was a hard pill to swallow as after being the stronger team for much of the game, Drumgoon suffered another sore one point defeat. The dreaded relegation playoffs followed and safety was secured after a replay against Templeport after a replay. While Drumgoon were very competitive in all games and arguably deserved three victories from their four games, luck just wasn’t on our side and small margins went against us. It is a fine line between winning and losing and I believe this team is so close to being a top Intermediate team. Adding to the squad over the next number of years can propel Drumgoon to glory again.Thank you to Gerard McGeough, Ken Coughlan, and Benny McIntyre for their efforts with our senior team. Best wishes to Barry Cooney who has gone travelling. We hope to see him back in the Drumgoon colours again soon.

Referee Congratulations and well done to Donal Murphy who represented Drumgoon with distinction on the playing fields in 2024. His job is a hard one and we thank him for doing it on our behalf. We encourage anyone who may like to become a referee to talk to Donal and find out how rewarding it can be.

Cúl Camp This year, over one hundred boys and girls took part in our GAA summer camp on Boyle Park in summer 2024. They learned various skills and played many variations of gaelic games. Thank you to all the coaches who helped at the camp and to Cavan county board coaching and games for organising it.

County representation Congratulations to all the players who represented Drumgoon in county colours in 2024. Well done to all our development squad players who work hard to achieve highly. Congratulations to Darragh Lynch who was part of the Cavan U20 panel for 2024. Well done to Keith Fannin who represented Drumgoon, Cavan and Ireland. He continues to epitomise the heart and drive associated with our club.Camogie and Ladies football. Congratulations to all the ladies and girls who have represented Drumgoon on the playing fields in 2024 in football and camogie. We have a thriving ladies section in both codes and as we continue to integrate more and more we ask everyone to support our ladies section. We wish you continued success in 2025.

Parents Many thanks to all the parents of our players who devote their to time to allow our young members to play and train with Drumgoon. The driving, washing, supporting and encouraging is very much appreciated by all associated with coaching and games in the club and we continue to look for more parents to take on roles throughout the club in any way they can.

Recommendation In my capacity as Coaching officer over the last number of years I have noted the great service, commitment and dedication of coaches throughout our parish and club. Like players however, some can tend to drop off. In Drumgoon, we cannot afford to lose good coaches. We must work with our coaches to keep them active in coaching roles throughout the club. It has become increasingly difficult to enlist coaching teams as many good coaches drop off. I would ask that we all work together to keep our coaches interested, motivated and willing to progress and serve our club as best they can in various coaching roles. I often attend continuous professional development coaching courses. Other coaches from all over Cavan are good attendees and bring back new skills to their clubs. Drumgoon can become better at this. I feel we are missing out on good coaching habits and skill sets. I ask that we encourage and advise our coaches to continue to upskill to give them the confidence to continue their coaching journey with Drumgoon.

Officers Thank you to Jimmy, Damien, Margaret, Patricia and all our club officers and committee for your support and help with our coaching in 2024. To Margaret, thank you for everything you do for Drumgoon. You are the heartbeat of our club and you represent everything that Drumgoon is about. As Jimmy and Patricia leave their roles as Chairperson and Treasuer I want to sincerely thank you both for your service and dedication to our club and community. You both have worked tirelessly for many years to keep our club going and thriving and you will be massive losses in those roles. The standards you have set as club leaders have been an example to us all. I know you both will continue to be strong, hard working Drumgoon members and while we move and change roles, our dedication and love of Drumgoon Éire Óg never ceases. Thank you Patricia. Thank you Jimmy. Aogan
